2010’s Room in Rome is based on the 2005 Chilean film En La Cama (In Bed). Both these reviews have had a lot of attention since their posting. Beautiful young people getting romantic is always an easy sell. Room in Rome does change a gender around, the character’s motivations are quite different, but the premise is still intact.
The premise is simple. Stick 2 good looking people in a room, get them naked, steamy love scenes, and have them talk and fall in love between bouts of love making.
Room in Rome in many ways is over produced. The makers essentially took the great concept behind En La Cama and remade it with a bigger budget. The final effect is a very glossy and beautiful film. While En La Cama revels in its hand-held digital camera work. It’s raw, real and smarter than Room in Rome. It’s disappointing that they didn’t reuse the En La Cama script, it could easily have been redone for any combination of sexes.
Regardless of which is more successful as a film, this post is compare the aspects of the two films not covered off by either of my reviews. I’m going compare the two on completely useless but fun criteria. See who comes out ahead.
Room in Rome: Two women strolling down the cobbled streets of Rome under the pale glow of street lamps? Even if En La Cama had a lead up, it’d be hard pressed to beat that sort of atmosphere.
En La Cama (In Bed): No leading up to the “room” as they’re already in the room getting down.
Room in Rome: Alba has a wonderfully mischievous smile.
En La Cama (In Bed): Bruno’s grin can only bring a smile to your face.
.Room in Rome: Natasha to Alba, “I think it’ll work better if you undress me.”
En La Cama (In Bed): Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
.Room in Rome: Maximo looks like he’s up for anything and the chicks dig Italian men.
En La Cama (In Bed): Bruno looks like a fun guy, but he’s always going to hit on the girl you like and end up leaving with her.
Room in Rome: Room in Rome’s gross misinterpretation of Google Earth as a Microsoft Bing product is so blatantly wrong
En La Cama (In Bed): There are no maps, just sex and cigarettes.
.Room in Rome: A classic white bathroom with a claw foot tub. Standard hotel fare.
En La Cama (In Bed): The rooms in En La Cama have a Hot Tub!
Room in Rome: I’ve never known Europeans to be shy of tobacco, so it’s a wonder why a Spanish and Russian woman don’t smoke.
En La Cama (In Bed): The couple enjoy smoking liberally and often. The Chileans win on sheer volume alone!
Room in Rome: There are actually two singing scenes. Some eurotrash and show scene with a classic Italian tune.
En La Cama (In Bed): Daniela bopping around to some nameless latin pop is fun.
Room in Rome: Alba and Natasha are a bit too controlled.
En La Cama (In Bed): Daniela and Bruno do it with enthusiasm.
Room in Rome: Natasha… Alba…
En La Cama (In Bed): Bruno… Daniela…
The final score is 6 vs. 6, a tie! I’m surprised by the final results. I definitely thought En La Cama was going to come out ahead. This just goes to show you that even though Room in Rome equals the Chilean film on sexy criteria, the sum of it’s parts is not a better film.
Here’s the dream scenario. It’s Room in Rome with the En La Cama script in it’s entirety. With Bruno and Natasha as it’s main characters. Now that’s a film I’d enjoy!
