Set in Cuba, Eva (Prakriti Maduro) is a young seamstress at a state-run dress factory. Her fiery personality flares up when she’s frustrated by her lack of creative freedom and her lazy boyfriend Angel (Carlos Enrique Almirante). When Jorge (Juan Carlos García), a handsome Venezuelan comes into her life, she sees the possibilities of life beyond her restrictive work, parents and country. When he disappears she sees comfort in the things she disdained, she falls in love with her boyfriend again. What does she do when Jorge comes back?
This movie hums along happily till mid way when it starts going off the rails. Despite lacklustre acting the film’s story had promise. However, the narrative turns to green-skinned aunties, opening a tea room/lounge, fashion show and a hooker ghost are thrown into the last half. The ending is a complete cop-out too.
The Cuban film ministry must have not known this film was going on. If they did, they would have likely ordered reshoots for most of the cinematography. Havana wasn’t shown in its best light. Something has happened to director Fina Torres, the 9 years between Woman on Top (with Penelope Cruz) and this drivel, someone has stolen her story telling skills.
