Twin sisters, Badass (Sylvia Soska) and Geek (Jen Soska) discover the body of a hooker in Badass’ classic Pontiac Thunderbird trunk. Out the night before, Badass and friend Junkie (Rikkie Gagne) can’t recall anything that happened. Not wanting to take any chances, she chooses to bury the body while the real killer hunts them down. Geek’s best friend, who’s a devout Christian (C.J. Wallis) provides the group with a moral compass.
This indie grind house horror film is by Vancouver film makers Jen and Sylvia Soskas. It’s quite a bit of movie, for very little money. It’s ambitious film, they direct, write, and produce. I’d be surprised if their parents didn’t cater too.
Their commitment to gore and doing all the dirty work is commendable. Starting off with what’s good, the characters are likable and the acting was far better than I expected. Sylvia is quite believable as the tough physical sister. Geek has more of a mischievous comedic flare to her. In the film, she only needed to raise her eyebrow and it had me smiling. When Jen’s character loses an eye, she oddly becomes hotter.
The script had some good lines that had me laughing out loud. I can’t decide if it’s clever writing or something else. I loved it when Badass told the Christian, “Sew it up like a quilt.” while attaching Junkie’s arm.
Story wise it’s a fairly simple, friends find dead body in trunk, they must hide it, have wacky adventures while discovering who the murderer is. I can see all the elements in the film but it fails in editing. There were scenes which clearly should have gone elsewhere.
Shot in my hometown of Vancouver. The city is good and bad for the movie. The city is undoubtedly gorgeous, but it doesn’t really suit the movie. It’s just way too sunny for a grindhouse movie. It was shot clearly in late winter and the snow on/off the ground detail was poor for continuity. Perhaps the film would have been better if it was shot more at night and in Vancouver’s perpetual rain.
It’s on the technical side this film fares worst. Editing, sound engineering and camerawork are negatives. The sound is the worst and most noticeable. The audio sounds like it’s directly off the camera and the sound integration is very distracting. Much of crew and actors did double duty on the film. Aside from acting, C.J. Wallis had a hand in most of the technical parts of the film, including sound. I don’t believe he’s at fault, as he’s simply the guy that tried to pull it all together. The man even has a set design credit!
It’s a good first effort. I think the sisters have a legitimate career in acting and I’m curious to see what they could do with more money.
