Robert is a man of medicine. His wife died from burn injuries suffered in a car crash. As a renowned plastic surgeon, he’s dedicated the next 12 years to creating a new skin to save burn victims. In his estate he runs a clinic with only one client, her name is Vera. One that never leaves and is not allowed and sharp objects. The doctor’s techniques aren’t all legal and some stretch well beyond what’s ethical.

The film stars Antonio Banderas as Robert and Elena Anaya as the mysterious and beautiful Vera. You’ll recognize Anaya as Alba from Room in Rome. As in that film her being nude is a big part of the story line.

It’s a disappointing effort from writer/director Almodóvar. A time’s his films can be self-indulgent. This is one of those times. The film is based on a short story.  As a short film this would have been impactful.  Instead this feels drawn out.
