Black Lightning is a super hero inspired story, mixing cold war nostalgia with modern day Russian affluence. The film borrows from Back to the Future, Transformers, and Spider-Man. Few films have been so good while blatantly ripping off other films, this one surprisingly succeeds.

Nimmermeer (Nevermore) 2006 Germany

A fairy tale inspired movie of a fisherman who catches no fish, a boy with no family and a circus of freaks. With the combination of great acting and haunting outdoor visuals, Nimmermeer is truly cinematic in it’s scope and impact.

Ong Bak 3 2010 Thailand

Ong Bak 3 continues the story from Ong Bak 2, but shares nothing but the name from first Ong Bak. Clearly this is to destroy any love we have for the original. It’s working.

Låt Den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One In) 2008 Sweden

This Swedish film mixes childhood innocence and vampires in a way that is both horrifying and tender. Thankfully, it’s a unique vampire story that absolutely has no resemblance to Twilight. The film is a beautifully told story with atmospheric visuals and great performances.

Valhalla Rising 2009 Denmark England

The film is not a non-stop slash fest of blood and gore. It’s quick and brutal; One Eye is an unapologetic killing machine. Considering his character is mute and with only one eye, he’s able to convey emotion and a physicality that communicates beyond words. He’s brooding and threatening.

Tres Dias (Before The Fall) 2008 Spain

The film also accurately conveys how depressing the situation is. There’s no Bruce Willis’ Armageddon bravado, there’s only impending global extinction. This film doesn’t beat around the bush.
